When Aubrey Parsons asked audience member Paul Dark to join him on stage for a song at the Celtic Manor in 2016, no one could have guessed what would happen next.
“It was like something from a film. The entire room just fell silent, all the customers turned and watched with their mouths agape. Even all the staff stopped what they were doing and became engrossed in what was happening on the stage. It was beautiful.” Said Carly Lewis, waitress at The Celtic Manor.
Paul was on a £9 Sun holiday at the Celtic Manor and with a little help from Jack Daniels he started to heckle Aubrey with lines such as ‘Play something we know…’ followed up with ‘Play something YOU know…’
Aubrey became a little annoyed and asked Paul if he was a singer and if he wanted to join him on stage. “I wanted to humiliate him after all his heckling so I chose the hardest song I could think of which at that time was ‘The Prayer’ by Andre Bocelli which is in English and Italian. Ironically Paul knew the song and we performed it as a duet and they nailed it.”
Another customer filmed the duet on his mobile phone and posted the footage to Facebook. The clip started getting thousands of hits, and the next day both Wales Online and the Daily Mirror ran stories about the performance which helped make the video go viral.
Owing to the massive amount of interest in the video, Aubrey and Paul formed ‘Parsons and Dark – Larger than Life!’ and subsequently recorded an album and have been working together ever since.
“We are both rejects from The Voice, X-Factor, BGT and All together now and we are quite proud of that!”
People seem to love the duo for what they do. For example a video shot by a member of staff in the Dovey Inn, Aberdovey in July of the pair singing ‘The Four Chord Song’ by Axis of Awesome clocked up almost 3 million views on Facebook in just one week making it their second viral video in 3 years.
The pair often sing in both English and Welsh and talk about their experiences in the music industry between songs. Including Aubrey’s work with Midge Ure, Damon Hill, ABC, The Stereophonics, and meeting John Hurt, Al Green, Ant & Dec etc. Whilst Paul also has a few stories to tell, including how his step mother influenced him to sing Myfanwy and not forgetting that time he accidentally ended up singing backing vocals on a tour for Phil Collins.
