The Breath

The Breath is guitarist Stuart McCallum and singer Ríoghnach (pron. Ray-nuh) Connolly.  Born out of Manchester’s fertile music scene they draw on traditional Irish folk influences to present a contemporary,  kaleidoscope of sound defining their trademark take on alt-folk.

The Breath’s music journeys from lush, beguiling storytelling to uplifting, punch-the-air anthems. At its heart is Rioghnach’ s deeply soulful, utterly engaging, stop-you-in-your-tracks voice  – whether delicate and hushed or powerful and gutsy-  alongside Stuart’s understated brilliance and their exquisitely crafted, personal songs.  Yet it’s the emotional depth of the songs and the remarkable connection the duo share on stage that make the Breath’s live performance so compelling.

The Breath appear at Acapela Studio presenting material from their brand new album, ‘Let the Cards Fall’ (Real World, 14 September 2018) a bewitching collection of honest, heartfelt songs from Rioghnach written as a stream of poetic consciousness as likely to touch on childhood summers and first love as cultural dislocation, post-colonial injustices and grief.  Joined by Luke Flowers (drum) and John Ellis (piano) expect a performance that, in the words of fRoots is ‘gentle and rolling, mountainous and anthemic… and emotionally charged” fRoots.   Unmissable.

“raw, soulful, often mesmeric, richly textured and lushly constructed…versatile persuasive vocals Mojo

“sunshine-on-rainy-streets ambience of the Blue Nile”  FT

“an affecting blend …. McCallum provides the grandeur and artifice and Connolly the intimacy and purity”  Uncut

The Breath rolls across the senses like clouds caress low hills – always moving, changing, evolving; and utterly fascinating” Folk Radio .com
